Michael Jordan was fined $5,000 per game in 1985 for wearing the Air Jordan 1 "Black/Red" because it didn't feature the color white, which was part of the Chicago Bulls' official team colors. Nike created the "Banned" campaign around the sneakers as a marketing tool to introduce and promote the Air Jordan line. In 1994, 2011, 2013, and 2016, the shoe underwent modifications. The 2011 model included an "X" on the heel to honor the "Banned" moniker.
