Chuck Kohn, un fotografo sportivo, ha fotografato Michael Jordan indossando le Air Jordan 1 Royals nel 1985. Questa fotografia, che è stata successivamente trasformata in un cartellone pubblicitario Nike, è stata la prima volta che qualcuno ha visto Michael indossare le sneakers Air Jordan 1. Mai. Jordan ha scelto le Royals, la sua colorazione preferita, per essere la prima Air Jordan 1 disponibile per l'acquisto. Erano anche l'unica colorazione che non ha mai indossato in campo tra i primi 3 colori Air Jordan 1 Retro ("Banned" e "Chicago").
